Thassos is a gorgeous island, the “jewel of North Aegean”. Verdurous and scenic, it magnetizes the visitors, as it combines rich vegetation of green pines and olive trees, with crystal - clear water. Visiting the island is an opportunity to enjoy nature. The rich pine forests, firs and olive trees cover the biggest part of the island. Green is one of the characteristics of the island, since the pines reach out until the lacy waterside and crags.

The island spares many beautiful and clean beaches such as, the Xrisi Ammoudia (Golden Sand) in Scala Panagias, the Paradise, the Alykes, Psili Ammo, St. Anthony in Poto, Pevkari, Akti Limenarion, Tripiti, Atspa in Scala Marion, Papalimani, Glyfada and Limanaki in the capital of the island Limena. The island has many water springs, the greatest of which is in the village Panagia, where the cold, clean and drinkable water springs directly from the mountain. The climate in Thassos is mild, cool in the summer and mild in winter.

Thassos has been populated since the prehistoric times. The first historic report was made by the father of History Herodotus, who had visited the island. According to mythology, one of the many erotic adventures of Zeus, the greatest of all ancient Greek Gods, was the reason how Thassos was… “discovered”. In eastern Phoiniki, there was a king in those ancient years, Aginoras, who had three sons, Phoinika, Kilika and Kadmo, and one daughter, Europe. One spring day, Zeus, transformed in … a bull, kidnapped the stout and beautiful Europe, and brought her to Crete, into a cave, the so called Diktaio Antro. Thassos (grandson or son of Aginora) after looking in different places after Europe, came to this island. He was fascinated by the magnificent climate and the rich vegetation. Since he could not return without Europe, he stopped the indagation and settled down with his companions on this island, which is called after him.

Honey, olive oil and marble are the products that proof the undoubted wealth of this island. Thassos has been, from the ancient times until today, a dynamic apiculture centre. In the pine forest lands live thousands of bee swarms.
The apiarian association of Thassos, which counts about 100 apiarists is located in the area of Prinou. This apiarian centre has been working for twenty – five years. The purpose of this centre is the gathering of honey from the farmers, the canning and the distribution to the Greek market as well as abroad.
From the late 18th century olive trees replace the hectares of vineyards in Thassos. As a result olive oil becomes the basic nutritional element.
From the white marbles, the ones from Thassos (Thasitiko) are the whitest worldwide and consequently in great demand. White Thassos is also called Ololefko Thasou (Totally White Thasou), Chionolefko Thasou (Snow-white Thasou ), Thasitiko and Crystallina.
